Male pageantry is the last place you expect to find an Electrical Engineer, but Rume Dominic is not letting societal pressures derail his dreams. Just last year, he took a bold step in partaken in
the Mr Universe Nigeria Contest with over 30 other male competitors, He did not win but he came out as Mr Universe Nigeria Top Model. ,in few chats with the Top model and an electrical Electronic engineer, he answers why modeling and even acting is top on his mind.
I am Dominic Orume Uririe, popularly known as "Dominic Rume" ,First out of five "5" children from Mr Dominic Uririe's family in Orerokpe Urhrobo tribe in Delta state Nigeria, a graduate of
electrical electronic engineer from the Covenant University.
How did it feel like being named Mr Universe Nigeria Top Model?
I felt good and fulfilled. I did not win the overall prize but being named Mr Universe Nigeria
Top Model made me feel like, ‘I came, I saw, I conquered’. It is a nice feeling.
What are you going to do with this new found status?
Firstly, I will definitely help promote my career as a model. I am sure I will get more jobs
in months to come. in fact already, I have been getting contacts from international
brands. I also believe that with this position I can help my society and mankind as a whole.
As Mr Universe Nigeria Top Model, I can also help young aspiring models who are trying to
break into the industry but are finding it hard. I also want to go to orphanages to help out those
Are you single or in a relationdship?
I have a special someone in my life..
May we know this special someone?
I prefer not to mention as she prefers not to be in the news
What is the next step for you now?
I want to go international. I am going for a show this month in
Dallas Texas. I was invited by
the African Chamber of Commerce. The event is called
The 6th Annual Ankara Festival.
I have also been invited to some international fashion events.
I know that there are many
opportunities abound across the world, and there are people
I can inspire.
I want to project the image of the place I am coming from.
What were you doing before the competition?
I studied Electrical Engineering at Covenant University. When I was done, I started working for MTN.
Did you resign to take part in the competition?
No, I resigned because I wanted to further my studies. I am am going for my Masters
in engineering management. I will be doing that in Australia by June.
who is your mentor and why?
i have so many mentors, but i will mention just one who is very dear to my heart; My spiritual mentor
His name is Pastor David Oyedepo
He is a responsible man of faith and a spiritual giant and a man that doesn't see impossibility
and very optimistic just like me, where others are failing he is successful .
and nothing stops him,I like His vision torescue the destiny of the black man and its a vision
i have also keyed into
With the current situation and Economic drought in the nation? what advice would you
give to the youths who has given up and to those about to give up in the nigerian dreams?
Hmmm,Well i would like to say at this point that the economic situation should not be an
excuse for any one to be unproductive and go into crime like a lot of youths are doing right now,
I feel we should determine th economy and not to let the economy end and terminate our goals
as the youths. just keep pushing and God will reward your efforts.
That is really inspiring, there is a motion that those going into such competitions are
people who did not do well in school, how would you advice young people
who would like to be in your shoes?
I would advise that they should stay true to their talents and they should not give up on their dreams.
Because of the general mindset that models are never-do-wells, they should not give in to people
dissuading them. I faced a lot of challenges myself. Family and friends say that I have a good job
and a good degree, why do I want to trade all that for modelling? But they did not understand
my dream and what I want for myself. Wining this competition to me was an assurance that
I am on the right part.
Many models in Nigeria are now switching to the acting career, are you going to do that as well?
That is an interesting question. Believe it or not, I am already on the set of a movie.
I still have one or two scenes to go. I think it is part of the package when you decide to be
a model. I was approached just after winning the competition and was asked if I would
like to feature in a movie, how would I say no. The next thing you know, I am already acting.
So I can add ‘actor’ to my CV now.
In 5 years time, where should we expect to see Dominic Rume?
5 years time.. i see my self at a leading point in my career... a point where i will be able to lead
for others to follow both the young and the old.
